Mexquite

This was not our first time visiting Mexquite and it definitely won’t be our last. We both are big fans of this restaurant, and their Happy Hour stayed true to par and did not disappoint. I’m just going to start this blog out by saying if you have never been there, this is a must try location (now you can either save yourself some time and stop reading now, or you can carry on for more details).

As aforementioned having frequented Mexquite before, I was highly anticipating the moment when our chips and salsa would be set before us on the bar top. Their fire roasted salsa is one of our all-time favorites around (possibly not just one, but the all-time favorite). According to their website, Happy Hour starts at 3pm. After arriving and locking up our scooters out front, the time was just before 3:00 so we hung outside for a bit before heading in. As it turned out, we did not need to torture my salsa craving taste buds for that additional time because they recently changed their Happy Hour hours to start at 2pm. Good to know for next time! Because, oh…there will be a next time.

Almost immediately after sitting down, our bartender, Katelyn, asked if we would like to order a drink. I say “almost immediately” because there was just enough hesitation of time to allow for Brian to excuse himself to use the little boy’s room, so I replied in answer that I would wait for my husband to return. There is a reason why I mention Brian’s whereabouts at this moment which will be explained later in this blog. (Ha! If you are still reading after the first paragraph, now I’ve got you sucked in until the end!) Upon his return, Katelyn once again was standing before us asking if we’d like to order a drink. Brian chose the Watermelon Margarita and I went with the Blackberry Margarita. Both margaritas were tasty. The watermelon one was more on the sweet side, but the Tajin along the rim balanced it out nicely.

For our appetizers we chose the Taqueria Tacos with carnitas and Taquitos Dorados with shredded beef. And oh my goodness…let me tell you! Perfection! There was so much flavor packed in both of these appetizers, the addition of dumping the salsa that’s supplied with the chips on top of my food as I would normally do at other Mexican restaurants, wasn’t a necessary addition at all. And there was no skimping of meat with either one of these appetizers. They were both stuffed until the seams were about to burst. This is when I witnessed two miracles. After I had taken a couple bites of my food, I looked over to find Brian’s plate completely cleaned off.  I took a quick look onto the floor to see if he had spilled it. Nope. He inhaled his entire plate in record time! The second miracle was the fact within itself that Brian actually finished all the food on his plate. This very infrequently happens. Practically never. He not only ate all his food, he also ate all the garnishments on his plate. I think they were all edible…

I got so excited about writing about the food that I forgot to mention anything about the décor of Mexquite which includes open beam ceilings, traditional Mexican Knick knacks and piñata lights made out of what looks to be a ball with party hats glued around it and the entire thing spray-painted silver. I should also mention (as I traditionally do) that they have ample seating at the bar, more seating in the restaurant area and additional seating in their outdoor area located in the back of the restaurant.

After we polished off our food, it was my turn to frequent the little girl’s room (mainly to wash the remains of the fantastic food off my hands before I started publicly licking all my fingers). And this is where my earlier comment comes back into play. That’s right…Brian’s visit to the little boy’s room. Upon returning to my barstool, I casually turned towards Brian and quietly said, “I know this sounds odd, but the women’s bathroom smelled like popcorn”. His reply? “OMG…so did mine!” This remained to be our topic of discussion and (not quiet anymore) laughter for quite some time. I imagine, and honestly hope, this is the only time I will talk about bathroom smells on this website.

Since I already told you we would definitely recommend frequenting Mexquite, I’m trying to figure out now how I should finish this post. I most certainly don’t want to end it talking about bathroom smells. Maybe I’ll just take a quick break for a minute and go make myself some popcorn.
