Corner Tavern & Grill

Our original destination for Shake and Date this time was The Iron Bulldog, but after not being able to determine if they indeed had a happy hour due to them not having a website, Brian called and asked. It turns out they do, however, they are currently remodeling their kitchen which meant there was no food available, so we set them back into the bottle and shook again. What popped out next was Corner Tavern & Grill. I tried looking them up to find out their Happy Hour hours only to discover they also do not have a website. But according to what Google provided, their Happy Hour hours were 3pm – 6pm, so we hopped on our scooters and scooted their way. Upon our arrival at 5:07pm, we were greeted by a sign that stated Happy Hour 3pm – 5pm. Bummer. But at this point, we were committed and decided to just proceed with our Happy Hour adventure “pretending” it was within the Happy Hour timeframe.

After first looking around I would like to state there was an “older” clientele there, however, after including looking at us after looking at everyone else around us (and not seeing a difference), I decided to report that there is a “mature” clientele present. At least during the 5 o’clock hour. They have a good supply of seating at the bar, and several high top and low top tables located inside. They also have a small outdoor area that has about 5 tables in tandem along about a 6 foot wide space next to an iron fence facing Sibley Street (in other words, nothing spectacular, but at least you can choose to sit outside if you’d like).

Upon perusing the menu, we determined they have a very diverse selection of foods ranging from Italian to Mexican all the way to the Southern comfort of fried chicken on Wednesdays. They have a nice selection of different pizzas, one of which caught my eye, simply for how “different” it was (at least in my pizza knowledge). It’s called the “Dilly Dilly Bacon Pickle Pizza”. Yep, you read that right. Bacon and pickles. Brian, being the one with more conservative taste buds immediately said, “ewww”, and talked me into settling for a combination. However, after he placed our order with the bartender, I asked him (the bartender, not Brian), “what’s the deal with the Dilly Dilly?” (Now THAT’S a fun sentence to say!) “Is it a popular pizza?” His reply was yes and that when he started there his initial thought was also “ewww”, but it’s actually really good. The bartender, who we had known for all of 5 minutes was able to do something his wife of over 2 years was unable to do, and that was to convince Brian to give it a try. We both ended up being very happy the literal stranger was able to sway my husband’s initial decision. It was quite delicious, right down to the brick oven baked crust. You may want to get over to there and give this one a try.

For cocktails, Brian had Rocky’s Margarita and I had the Agave Passion Fruit Margarita. They were both very tasty, however I think mine was the tastier of the two being as it had jalapeno in it, so it also came with a little kick. A previous post mentions my first spicy margarita may have gotten me hooked, and I still stand by that statement.

When we were done and got our bill, it ended up being about the same as we’ve paid at all the other Happy Hours we’ve attended, so even though technically we did not make their Happy Hour, it turned out the same in the end (translation, their prices weren’t that bad).

Side note, parking can be a challenge unless you are on a scooter, being as there is a very small parking lot and located right next door is a gym. And, we did learn our bartenders name was Jesse, so I guess he’s no longer a complete stranger. And he was great. He asked if I was ready for another round right as my glass hit the counter. And when I asked for a water and someone else came up to talk to him right after, he poured my water and set it in front of me without missing a beat from the other conversation.

  1. Sounds like a nice place! We come down the hill to Folsom frequently, so we’ll have to give it a try. ( And it’s ok to say “older”! II am, but I’ve nevet never been accused of being mature!😎
